How do Voice chat and calls work?

How Voice and Live work in Rooms, how Inbox calls work, who can speak, and how to fix mic problems.

Highrise has two kinds of voice: Voice in a Room, which the room owner or a moderator turns on for everyone there, and calls in the Inbox with people you message. Speaking in room Voice needs Age Verified 18+ status, and calls are for players 18 and older.

How do I turn on Voice in my Room?

Room owners and moderators start Voice from the room's info panel: Enable Voice turns on Voice, and Go Live starts a Live session that runs for one hour. During Live, the owner or a moderator can add another hour with Add 1 hour or end it at any time. Live ends when the last owner or moderator leaves the room.

During a Live session, only the owner and moderators speak at first, and they can invite visitors to join as speakers. Live rooms can appear in the Live section of the Directory.

Who can speak?

The room owner and moderators can always speak while Voice is on. They can invite visitors with Invite to Voice, remove speakers, and make Voice open to everyone or private to selected players. If you're invited, accept the invitation to join Voice.

How do I mute someone?

Tap the speaker and choose Mute Voice. This only mutes them for you. To stop hearing Voice entirely, use the mute control in the room's Voice panel.

How do calls in the Inbox work?

Open a conversation and start a call. In a group chat, everyone in the group can join. You can only be in one call at a time, and joining a call takes you out of room Voice. Calls end automatically after a few minutes with no one talking.

Why can't I use Voice or calls?

  • Age: Speaking in room Voice needs Age Verified 18+ status, which you get by passing both the selfie and the ID check. Calls are only for players 18 and older. See Which features are limited by age, and why can't I use voice?

  • Restriction: A mute on your account also blocks voice until it ends.

  • Room settings: The room may not have Voice on, or Voice may be private.

My mic isn't working

  1. Allow Highrise to use your microphone in your device's settings. If you denied it once, the app can't ask again, so you have to turn it on there.

  2. Check that you aren't muted in the room and that you've joined as a speaker.

  3. Close other apps that use the mic, like calls or recorders.

  4. Leave and rejoin the room or call, then restart the app if needed.

If others can't hear you after all that, contact Support through How do I contact support? with your device model, app version, and the room name.

How do I report voice abuse?

Tap the speaker and choose Report User's Voice Activity, or use Report Voice in the room's Voice controls. See How do I report another player?
